Active Denial System (ADS) - a "non lethal" weapon that creates a wave of excruciating pain from up to 2 kilometers away. The weapon uses short microwaves to heat up the outer layer of a person's skin and cause pain.
The MEDUSA (Mob Excess deterrent Using Silent Audio) is a microwave weapon that creates sound directly into people's heads that doesn´t need to go through the eardrum.
This program may well be used in shopping malls to control people's behavior.

The LRAD device can issue a verbal warning and has the capability of following up with a deterrent tone to influence behavior or determine intent.

With LRAD, you just aim it at a member of the crew, and have an interpreter "speak" to the sailor. It was noted that the guy on the receiving end was sometimes terrified, even after he realized it was that large American destroyer that was talking to him. This apparently gave the army guys some ideas, for there are now rumors in Iraq of a devilish American weapon that makes people believe they are hearing voices in their heads.

Islamic terrorists tend to be superstitious and, of course, very religious. LRAD can put the "word of God" into their heads. If God, in the form of a voice that only you can hear, tells you to surrender, or run away, what are you gonna do?

How about everyone that goes to places where they forsee these units put into action wear headphones much like the ones you use at shooting ranges? On Helicopters etc.

LRAD – is a long-range hailing and warning, directed acoustic device designed to communicate with authority and exceptionally high intelligibility in a 15-30 degree beam. LRAD can issue a verbal challenge with instructions in excess of 500 meters and has the capability of following up with a warning tone to influence behavior or determine intent.

There’s a lot you can do with this. Record a message in whatever language you want and you can shoot bulletins to flood survivors or refugees to advise them where to find help. Switch to an annoying whine and dial it up a notch and you can use the LRAD as a weapon.

Cruise-ship crews have even used the device to ward off pirates. The Army and Marine Corps in Iraq use it to disperse crowds and, in a mounted version, to protect convoys. Corrections and police departments armed with LRAD can put down riots without firing a shot
Long Range Acoustic Device—a megaphone with unprecedented clarity and aim that can shoot compact sound waves across several hundred yards at up to 150 decibels. the LRAD is for fending off insurgents, dispersing crowds, flushing out buildings, maintaing port security, and telling people "not to come any closer," says Marine Capt. D. J. McSweeney. Thirty-three inches in diameter, the LRAD plays MP3s and prerecorded warnings in several languages and has an adjustable screeching tone.

Earlier this month, the New York Police Department showed off a machine called the Long Range Acoustic Device, developed for the military and capable of blasting at an earsplitting 150 decibels -- as loud as a firecracker, a jet engine taking off or artillery fire at 500 feet, according to the Noise Center at the League for the Hard of Hearing.

ATC pioneered a new category of long-range hailing and communications solutions with LRAD's high intelligible 15-30° directed acoustic beam. LRAD can issue verbal instructions in excess of 500 meters and has the capability of following up with powerful alert tones. Over 450 LRADs are currently deployed worldwide in a variety of government, military and commercial applications, including deployments on-board commercial marine vessels and international cruise lines.

What makes the LRAD product unique is its ability to transmit messages with exceptional voice intelligibility and tonal clarity in a highly directional beam, even with significant ambient noise. The directionality of the LRAD device reduces the risk of exposing nearby personnel or peripheral bystanders to harmful audio levels.

But the device met and exceeded our expectations. There was nearly no distortion. In fact, at one statute mile, we clearly listened to a Frank Sinatra record and could understand the words, hear the intonations and pitch, and even the background music! Other sounds, especially those in the higher frequency ranges like sirens and screams, were easily detected even over the noise from the 5 Freeway a short distance away.
The Voice of God weapon — a device that projects voices into your head to make you think God is speaking to you — is the military’s equivalent of an urban myth.? Meaning, it’s mentioned periodically at defense workshops (ironically, I first heard about it at the same defense conference where I first met Noah), and typically someone whispers about it actually being used. Now Steven Corman, writing at the COMOPS journal, describes his own encounter with this urban myth:

MEDUSA Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio
The U.S. military bankrolled early development of a non-lethal microwave weapon that creates sound inside your head.
Sounds created directly in the skull bone that doesn´t have to go through the eardrum. You can´t block it out.
But in the end, the gadget may be just as likely to wind up in shopping malls as on battlefields, as I report in New Scientist. The project is known as MEDUSA – a contrived acronym for Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio.

The main goal of the Phase I project was to design and build a breadboard prototype of a temporary personnel incapacitation system called MEDUSA (Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio). This non-lethal weapon is based on the well established microwave auditory effect (MAE). MAE results in a strong sound sensation in the human head when it is irradiated with specifically selected microwave pulses of low energy.

The project is known as MEDUSA – a contrived acronym for Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio. And it should not be confused with the Long Range Acoustic Device and similar gadgets which simply project sound. This one uses the so-called "microwave auditory effect": a beam of microwaves is turned into sound by the interaction with your head. Nobody else can hear it unless they are in the beam as well.

The MEDUSA (Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio) creates a microwave audio effect that can implant sounds and possibly specific messages inside people’s heads.

And if you're thinking ear plugs are this thing's Kryptonite, think again. Lee Sadovnik of Sierra Nevada Corp. said normal audio safety limits are off the table since the sound bypasses the eardrums and emanates from within the skull. "The repel effect is a combination of loudness and the irritation factor," he said. "You can't block it out.

The Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio ("MEDUSA") is based on a well-known phenomenon, but the link to potential military use has only recently been made. When active, the MEDUSA's microwave beam causes shockwaves inside its targets' skulls which can be detected by the ears. A series of microwave pulses can also be created to produce recognisable sounds.

A US defence contractor, Sierra Nevada Corporation, is claiming to have developed a technology that allows sounds to be beamed directly into people's heads. According to the New Scientist, the kit, dubbed MEDUSA (Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio), uses microwave pulses to heat tissue inside people’s skulls, causing a less than charming audible effect. The pulses can be manipulated to transmit particular sounds.

The Active Denial Technology hardware demonstrator (ADS System 0) represented the first integration of the key technology elements such as the millimeter wave source, cooling system, and antenna, among other things. In 2001, ADS System 0 successfully demonstrated that the technology could achieve desired effects at distances beyond small arms range, and set the stage for the next evolution of the technology, ADS System 1.

The two devices under development by the civilian National Institute of Justiceboth build on knowledge gained from the Pentagon's controversial Active Denial System (ADS) - first demonstrated in public last year, which uses a 2-metre beam of short microwaves to heat up the outer layer of a person's skin and cause pain.

The US military is funding development of a weapon that delivers a bout of excruciating pain from up to 2 kilometres away. Intended for use against rioters, it is meant to leave victims unharmed. But pain researchers are furious that work aimed at controlling pain has been used to develop a weapon. And they fear that the technology will be used for torture. The research came to light in documents unearthed by the Sunshine Project, an organisation based in Texas and in Hamburg, Germany, that exposes biological weapons research. The papers were released under the US's Freedom of Information Act.
